Retro Gaming: Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES)

Super Mario Bros. 2 is a game that came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System. This is not Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels as that would be released later in Super Mario All Stars.

Premise

In this game, Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad are on different lands and there’s an evil that is present. It is not Bowser but one called Wart. While in most Mario adventure games Bowser is the primary villain, Wart is simply used as to be different. Essentially, the prime objective is to defeat Wart and save the land.

Gameplay

At the beginning of each section, there are four characters to choose from. You do not always have to select the same character. Strategy can be very important as each level will be different.

Mario has average speed and pick up time for picking up enemies and vegetables. In the beginning, Mario would not be a terrible choice to play the game as. Using him will help in terms of getting the basics down.

Luigi is one that can jump higher and doesn’t have as many issues with picking up items. Levels that are difficult such as Level 3-2 or even towards the end on 7-1 would be a good usage. It should be mentioned that in the United States, it is the first time to make Luigi different from Mario in terms of jumping.

Toad is one that has a lot of speed when it comes to picking up items. He is the fastest at picking up items. As an example, the first level, which is 1-1 would be a good place to start as the jumps are not extremely difficult. By using Toad, this will help in terms of what is expected for each character on the strengths and the weaknesses.

Princess Toadstool has the slowest rate of picking up items. There is one distinction in that she can float giving a few seconds in the air. For areas such as Level 3-2, using her would be the perfect choice to guarantee on completing the level.

Enemies

Unlike the original Super Mario Bros. game, there are enemies that are completely different. An example of such would be the Shyguy enemies. There are ones that just walk back and forth. There are a few that will shoot bullets.

For mini bosses, there are the Birdos. These will primarily shoot eggs, but there are variants that will shoot fire balls. A Birdo that shoots both eggs and fireballs can be beaten using the strategy of the eggs. If you are fighting ones that do not, the recommended approach would be to have some throw able items.

Mouser is also one boss in the game. Interesting enough, he appeared in the cartoon The Super Mario Bros. Super Show. His pattern involves throwing bombs and you must put them back on him to defeat him. Three times he gets attacked by the bombs and he will lose.

Wart appears only in a Mario game in which he is the final villain. His pattern is essentially moving back and forth and spitting out bubbles that can hurt. To defeat him, there are vegetables, and you must throw them in his open mouth. Do pay attention to when to do so as you do not want to throw while there are bubbles in the way.

Overall

Super Mario Bros. 2 is a good game to play. Yes, it is not like the original Super Mario Bros. game, but it doesn’t mean it was bad at all. It was enjoyable and it would be recommended to try out at the very least. The easiest way to play is to have a Nintendo Switch and have the NES Channel as it is available to play there. If you are looking to play the game authentically, the best bet is to search online and have an NES and buy the cartridge.
