Retro Gaming Reviews: Castlevania (NES)

Castlevania is a game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It is the first game of a franchise that had been going in terms of video games. Its last unique game on the consoles would be Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2. Today, the game can be found on the Castlevania Anniversary Collection along with other games like its sequel.

Premise

Dracula is terrorizing the world. The only one who can stop him is Simon Belmont. There is not much of a story in this game at all. Much like most games until Ninja Gaiden, there were few games that had an in-depth story. It is a simple and prime objective in that you have to defeat Dracula to save the world.

Gameplay

By default, the whip itself is not as strong but can be upgraded twice. The upgrades will stay as long as you stay alive. If you die, you will have to repower up your whip to full capacity. It is a platform game that is completely linear.

Side weapons are present in the game. You will see in a box to indicate the special weapon. You will need to use up and the attack button. Hearts are its own source of ammo. Once you have used them up, that will be it until you get some hearts. The weapons are as follows: knives, time clock to freeze enemies, holy cross, axe, and holy water. They can be upgraded on frequency to throw as it can go up to three but if you change weapons, the frequency drops down to one.

There are technically eighteen levels in the game. All sections have three stages before fighting a boss. Each boss will have their own life bar so it will be easier to determine how many hits before taking the bosses out.

A tip that can be useful is when you are fighting death, if you have the holy water, use it. You can freeze them in their place and make the fight a lot easier. The same can be said for Dracula second form. If you use it, you will be able to keep attacking without him moving to counterattack.

Overall

Castlevania is a good game to play. There are no passwords so it would require completing the game from beginning to end. It is not a long game, but it is challenging to play, nevertheless. To play the game on its own, you would need to have an NES and the cartridge itself. As a result, it would require buying it online on shops like Amazon or eBay. If you do not mind compilations, you can get the Castlevania Anniversary Collection.
