Asteroids is a game that has had many versions over the years. For the purposes of this review, the focus is going to be the Atari 2600 version. It is a popular game that involves being on a ship and shooting asteroids.
The goal in the game is to shoot the asteroids. There are different ones and must be broken down. Once they have been dealt with, it is time to continue to the very next level. There is no ending to this game. Just simply go about playing until the game is over or you are done playing.
Graphically, the game does the best it can. Considering the limitations of the Atari 2600, it is excusable. The asteroids are distinct colors. While it will not matter, at least they can be shown. It is easy to identify the ship.
For gameplay, you are controlling a ship. Use the joystick to move around and you have the fire weapon. There is a strategy that will work. You can turn the ship in different directions standing still and firing. While this will not be workable in the arcade version, it can be done for the Atari 2600. Just simply pay attention and fire at the asteroid.
For the game, it will continue you have decided to either stop playing or you get a game over. Once that happens, that’s it. There is no ending to this game at all. Furthermore, this is part of the era of the Atari 2600. Games with endings were more common in later consoles.
Asteroids for the Atari 2600 is not a bad game. Granted, it will not match the arcade, but it is a fun little game for a bit. Finding this game will be a challenge as it is unlikely in a store. Having a working Atari 2600 may be difficult to find. Use the Retron77 as a possibility. The cartridge is likely to be found online at stores like Amazon or eBay.
