Retro Gaming Review: Star Wars (Atari 2600)

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is a game for Atari 2600. It is one of the first few Star Wars games that came out in a home console or at least played. It is based off a scene in the movie itself. Today, there are many different ones that have come out over the years. Even more so, they are more advanced. Consider this and any other Star Wars that came out for the Atari 2600 as starting points.

Premise

The game itself doesn’t have a story, but it has to do with the Walkers. Just simply destroy them and you will get points. That’s all the game is. In short, it is essentially taking one scene. Since it was for the Atari 2600, it is acceptable to be a short game.

Gameplay

Playing this game is similar in respect to Defender. Just move your ship and start attacking the Walker. You will know the progress by each attack. As it changes colors, it means it is getting closer to being destroyed. Once done, move to another one. There does not appear to be an ending that says you win and will be fighting an endless supply. As a matter of fact, the game ends when you either turn the game off or you simply lose.

Overall

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is basic. Given that it is the Atari 2600, this is excusable as many games did not have an ending that involved being successful. As a matter of fact, most are just like arcade like games in going for the high score. While the scores will not save, it is simply showing the scores and nothing more. For the time, it’s not really a bad game. If you’re curious to check it out, your best bet would be to somehow find a working Atari 2600 and cartridge as well.
