Retro Gaming Reviews: Megamania (Atari 2600)

Megamania is a game for the Atari 2600.  It is another arcade style game that is present. Furthermore, there are many games that would follow that pattern for the system.

Primarily, the objective is to go about destroying all the objects on the screen.  There is a time limit, and you can see the bar. Complete the level and then move on.  The game does not end until you lose. It is one of those games where there is no true ending.

Graphically, there is not much to say about the Atari 2600. Megamania has objects that are not too hard to figure out. Using imagination would be the key. An example would be there are enemies that can look like bow ties or even possibly hamburgers. Granted, it is not likely to be the case but its imagination being the key is what you must work with.

The level begins with the first wave just going to the right.  Just shoot them completely. Having cleared the enemies, the timer left will be added to your score and you move to the next stage. The waves are going to be different so be mindful of the patterns. Every ten thousand points will result in an extra life.  Furthermore, you will be able to extend your playtime.

If you complete a single cycle through all the enemies, you will face them again. Unlike before, the patterns will be different. Much like playing through the first cycle, avoid the enemies and its projectiles depending upon which ones are present.

Megamania is a fun little game to play.  While it is not long, you can find some time to have some fun with it.  If you like games that involve shooting and have that arcade style of going for a high score, this is one to look at.  Megamania is not likely to be found at stores in-person.  Your best bet might be to find it online at Amazon or eBay.  It may be possible if you have a working Atari 2600 with the right hook ups.  The only other alternative would be the Retron77 as that will work with Atari 2600 games.  If you are looking to play it, that would be your best bet.
