Retro Gaming Reviews: Mega Man X4 (PS1)

Mega Man X4 is a game that was created on both the PlayStation and the PC.  It is the second series that has spawned from the Mega Man franchise. For the purposes of the review, the focus is going to be on the PlayStation version.  The Mega Man X Legacy Collection, which is now available on various platforms including the Xbox One, PS4, and the Switch, features the popular game.

From Mega Man X’s view, the story starts off with General meeting with a mysterious figure.  Little did he realize it was the main villain Sigma.  He is working on convincing the General, who is the leader of the Repliforce, to go independent and rebel against the humans.  He is reluctant to do so.

From Zero’s point of view, he has a dream of the past.  There is an evil scientist there that created him.  In the shadows, the figure is noticed as Dr. Wily.  For long time Mega Man fans, he was the main villain in the classic series.

Sigma is once again attempting to take over the world, and it is up to Mega Man X or Zero to stop him in the overall plot.  He has tricked Repliforce to doing his bidding unknowingly.  There are spies from within that have gotten involved.

In what is considered a first for the Mega Man X series, there are animated cutscenes.  While there are a few common ones, there are different ones depending upon which one you are playing as.  The animations are crisp and well done.  From a voice acting perspective, it’s not the best at all.  An example would be that Mega Man X doesn’t sound right.  A better example would be the later game Mega Man X8.

To begin Mega Man X4, you have two options.  You can select Mega Man X, or you can select Zero.  Once you’ve made that decision, you cannot go back and change between the two.  You will be playing as the one you selected the entire game.  A cut-scene will commence immediately.

Unlike the classic series for the first six Mega Man games, you start with an introduction stage.  Once you complete the stage, there are eight mavericks to fight.  The format becomes like the Mega Man classic formula in selecting the stages.

It should be noted that there is a difference in this one.  There are armor pieces to collect.  Four armor pieces to be precise.  Of course, this is only when you as Mega Man X.  With Zero, however, it is not the case at all.

After defeating the Maverick, you gain the weapon.  For X, it’s like classic Mega Man.  With Zero, however, it can be a technique that is added.  Either way, you get the power that was acquired after defeating the Maverick.

After four stages have been completed, there is a mid-stage.  If you are playing as X, you will play it and go face Colonel.  With Zero, it is just a cutscene and that is it.  Once completed, finish off the rest of the Mavericks.

Unlike Mega Man X, X2, and X3, you can save your progress.  You should take advantage of it if you are going to be playing or need to take breaks.  Make sure to have enough memory in your memory cards if you are playing on the original PlayStation. Mega Man X4 is the first one of the X series on consoles to go for saving.

From that point, just continue going through the linear path and get all the way to the end of the game.  Eventually, you will fight Sigma.  Once you defeat two of Sigma’s forms, you must continue fighting in what would be considered a third phase. After taking all of his health, you can then watch the final cutscene. You have completed the game.

Mega Man X4 is a good game to play and may be one of the best games in the Mega Man X series.  If you are a Mega Man fan, you will likely enjoy this game.  The cutscenes may not be the area to focus on for whether the game is good or not.  As mentioned earlier, you can find it on the Mega Man X Legacy Collection available on the Xbox One, PS4, or the Switch.  It is also possible to buy for the PC and even the PS1.  Buying it just by itself is likely to be online using Amazon or eBay.
