Retro Gaming Reviews: Mega Man (GB)

Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge is a game for the Game Boy itself.  This is the first of the five Mega Man game boy games.  It is essentially a mixture of two Mega Man games.  To provide context, it has robot masters from the first game along with the second one.

The basic plot is following the events of the first NES game. Dr. Wily is looking for revenge on Mega  While Mega Man games early on didn’t have an in-depth, it wasn’t complicated to understand it was about taking over the world.

In terms of graphics, it’s like the NES but on a lower scale.  If you are playing it on the actual system, the screen will be smaller.  If you are playing it on the TV, it is done with either the Super Game Boy or the Game Boy Player.  Both items are accessories that can be used to play Game Boy games.

The gameplay has four levels that are selectable.  Unlike the NES games, there were only four robot masters that would be shown at a time.  Perhaps it is due to the limitations of the Game Boy itself.  Go through the levels and then defeat the robot master’s and take the powers away.  Its style is the same as before with a rock-paper-scissor style.  That would mean that each robot has a different weakness.

Beating the levels will lead to going to Dr. Wily’s castle.  From that point, there are four more robots that must be fought.  They are the ones from Mega Man 2.  To be specific, it is Quick Man, Bubble Man, Heat Man, and Flash Man.  Once they are beaten, you get their powers as well.  There is a Game Boy exclusive boss to fight.  Defeating Enker will grant Mega Man a new weapon.

Of course, Dr. Wily is the final villain of the game.  Once beaten, the game is over.  He can be a bit of a challenge to get the pattern down. It would be recommended to use Enker’s weapon once you are the end.

Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge is a decent game for the Game Boy.  It can be played on a Game Boy Advance since it was backwards compatible.  If you have a Game Boy Advance and have the game itself, you can play it that way.  If the screen is too small to see for your eyes, there is the option to play on the TV using either the Super Game Boy or Game Boy Player.

You can find the game likely online.  For the experience on the system, you will have to buy the game likely online either at Amazon or eBay.  Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge is a game that would be worth playing.
