Retro Gaming Reviews: Fester’s Quest (NES)

Fester’s Quest is a game that is for the NES.  Sunsoft developed the game.  Its characters are based off with The Addams Family.  Well, the family is but not so much everything else.

The plot in the game is that there is a UFO ship that has shown up on Earth.  It’s happening while Uncle Fester is sitting out there with the moon.  He is relaxing but he sees that there is a UFO dropping something off.

For gameplay, it is essentially almost like an overworld view.  You can move in all directions.  Eliminate the aliens that are present on the screen.  Occasionally, they will drop items at random.  The following items are dropped: money, keys, light bulbs, blue gun (unless maxed out), red gun (appear after upgrading the weapon to the fourth level), blue whip, and red whip.  Firing is still the same.  You can use a regular controller or anything that can utilize turbo.

A pro tip that would be helpful in playing would be to max out the gun immediately before proceeding, which means collecting the blue guns.  Doing this will give you maximum power.  Make sure to avoid the red guns as they will decrease the power.  Though it can be mixed with other items like keys, money, or even light bulbs, be very careful that you do not pick up the red gun accidentally.

Utilizing a similar strategy, once you have access to the whip, max that one out as it can be useful when fighting alien bosses.  Be sure to pick up the blue whip as that is the one that will increase the level.  Picking up the red whip would lead to a downgrade.  It cannot go lower than the first.  Red whip items can show up immediately without waiting for the player to upgrade the weapon.

One area is the game over.  The only way that happens would be to lose all your health.  When doing so, you have the option to continue.  It will start you at the very beginning of the game.  It is a frustrating mechanic without question.

At the very least, it could be a second chance if there is an item that was missing.  Examples of such would be picking up missiles or needing more T.N.T. if you’ve been using it frequently.  There is a positive in that the bosses will not need to be fought again if they have been beaten previously.  Yes, you do have to go to the white buildings at the end of the section, but you don’t have to fight them again.

Fester’s Quest is a decent game to play.  It is very challenging without question.  It is not available on any area like the Nintendo Switch Online or even in the Virtual Console that used to run.  If you are looking to find the actual game cartridge, you will have a shot online with Amazon or eBay.  Make sure to have a working NES as well.
