Retro Gaming Reviews: Ninja Gaiden (NES)

Ninja Gaiden is an NES game that’s part of a trilogy. It is one of the first games that had come out to have full-blown cut-scenes.

The story in this one starts with a duel at the beginning between Ryu’s father and another mysterious fighter. The duel had ended with what appeared to be a death. Ryu Hayabusa had received a letter informing him of the duel and to meet with an old friend, Dr. Smith. Thinking his father had died, he had gone out to seek revenge on the one who killed him.

Graphically, the game was not that bad during the days of the NES. The game would never match anything of a higher caliber at the level of arcade games. The cut scenes were solid alongside playing the game.

Gameplaywise, the timer starts at 150 seconds and restarts to get to the next part. There are three lives in the game and there are unlimited continues. It is a very challenging game and requires strategy and practice. The game starts straightforwardly but becomes more challenging as you progress. To define the point of being more challenging, look at the areas that have more platforms.

There is a challenge in Ninja Gaiden as it is one of the most difficult games of that era. An example of a challenge would be if you lose to the boss, you will go back to the beginning of the previous section. The only exception, however, is that if you lose in the final stage against one of the three final bosses, you will go back to the beginning of the level. In short, be prepared for a challenge.

There is mercy in that if you defeat one of the final bosses before dying, you will not have to fight them again. Because of the nature of the game being hard, at least you have a chance of being able to just focus on the one you need to beat.

For NES games, this one would be worth checking out if you would like to take on a challenge. To be specific, the NES Channel is available currently.
