Donkey Kong is a game that became available on the NES. It is one that was based on the original Arcade game. Due to being based off the Arcade game, it is very similar with slight exceptions due to hardware limitations. In this one, it is a basic arcade game that does not have a true ending as it is continuous until the player loses.
For the story, Donkey Kong captured Pauline and Mario must rescue her.Â
There are three levels in the game. Perhaps due to limitations, they could not include the Pie Factory level initially. Initially, that means the original version that was developed for the NES only had three levels or sections on a level depending upon the interpretation. Because of this, you only had to complete the levels. As you complete the sections, the timer does increase a little bit but does become more challenging as time goes on.
Basic gameplay involves moving over to the right and jumping over obstacles. There are barrels in the first level, and you can get 100 points for jumping over one. For two, it would be 300 but it would have to be at the same time and must be careful. There are three lives in the game. You can get one extra life but that’s it. The second level involves jumping over gaps and avoiding fire and the trampoline like enemies. With the last level, you can clear eight spots to bring Donkey Kong level to complete the level.Â
It is a solid game for the time frame. Today, you can find the game on the Nintendo Switch Online playing on the NES Channel. It is worth checking out for what it was at the time. While it will not be able to match up to today’s gaming standards, it does not mean it cannot do well on its own merits. Playing Donkey Kong is worth checking out if you are interested in the original games before the later series Donkey Kong Country.
